TETRA Networks

Emergency services need the reliability, availability and security in their voice communications that TETRA offers. They need exactly the same things in their data services.

To date several attempts have been made to provide data services using other bearer networks, intended for consumer and business users, such as GPRS or 3G. This approach has allowed applications, originally developed for commercial markets, to be adapted for the emergency services market. However, because of their reliance on these networks, they typically lack the reliability, availability and security that is needed. They are particularly vulnerable in times of major incidents when commercial network may fail or become highly congested.

TetraENGINE

TetraENGINE represents a different approach. It is not simply an adaption of a commercial data services platform. TetraENGINE has been designed, in collaboration with Airwave, the premier TETRA operator in the UK, to deliver reliable, available and secure applications over the TETRA network. TetraENGINE is designed as a mission-critical system, is highly available, utilises data optimisation and compression techniques specific to TETRA, respects strict latency and performance requirements, implements complex security requirements and is relatively easy to enhance by adding new services which potentially work across multiple networks.

Applications include:
  • Computer check on vehicles and names
  • Passport and driving licence check (with images)
  • Fingerprint service
  • Life sign telemetry for firemen and other emergency services
  • Updating of intelligence files directly from mobile units
  • Chat and optimised email services
  • Mapping applications
  • Gateway service for third party applications
    • End to end applications
    • Benchmarking
    • Bespoke development etc etc
