The Greatest (Mobile) Show on EarthPosted Mar 2018
Roll-up, roll-up it’s the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona. And roll-up they did again this year: 107,000 delegates cramming the halls at the Europa Fira to see the latest gadgets, toys, apps and, yes – network software and infrastructure developments.
Not surprisingly, this year’s show was dominated by the topic of 5G. We suspect that next year’s show will be as well. Nevertheless, it was good to see that alongside the 5G hype, there was an undercurrent of realism.
Indeed, our COO Steve Buck spoke in the main conference hall during a panel debate called “A 5G Reality Check”. One of the key things about 5G is that, as a technology, it can’t simply be about it being a bigger, faster pipe. For 5G to really deliver for the operator community and provide a return on their investment, it will need to drive change in the operator business model as well. Opening up new services, partnerships and revenue opportunities. Network security is going to be fundamental to that offer as Steve pointed out from the stage.
The highlight of the week for us though was not Steve speaking in one of Hall 4’s main auditoriums, it was the Glomo Awards ceremony taking place next door at exactly the same time.
The Glomos – aka the GSMA’s Global Mobile Awards – are perhaps the most established, and highest profile, awards in the mobile industry. The GSMA positions them as the industry’s Oscars; and just like the Oscars the panel of judges is a closely guarded secret – all we really know is that there are more than 250 of them and that the CTO’s of some of the world’s largest operators are involved.
We were therefore delighted to win this year’s Glomo Award for the Best Mobile Authentication and Security Solution - in the face of some really tough competition. We see it as further recognition of the strength of our solution and of our approach to mobile network security. Last year we picked up the security solution award from industry news website, Telecoms.com and earlier this year, specialist research house Rocco ranked us as the number one supplier in the industry – but the Glomo Award really did put the cherry on the top of our MWC cake.
In presenting the award, the Glomo judges said that our solution supports both group and individual operators, delivers excellent levels of protection, requires no replacement or upgrade as networks evolve, and enables operators to provide security as a standard part of their service. We really couldn’t put it better ourselves.
